DIGISOC Summer School II

From 18 to 22 May 2026, the Palacký University Olomouc (CZechia) hosts the 2nd DIGISOC Summer School, focused on the effect of AI tools on Communication, Education and Society.

One week full of activities – AI workshops, project works, international teamwork, lectures, critical debate – about three interdisciplinary key tracks: Digital Communication, Digital Education, and Digital Humanism.

The Programme

  • Monday 18th May – INTRODUCTION

Day 1 will start with introductory session explaining the goals of the summer school including the summer school project, overviewing the agenda and examining the effect of AI tools on communication, education and society, as well as developing the ability of participants to use the AI tools effectively.

  • Tuesday 19th May – DIGITAL COMMUNICATION

Day 2 sessions include lecture and seminar focusing on Digital Communication. Students will examine the interconnections between new media and contemporary society, with particular attention to the role of digital communication technologies in processes of social and cultural change. This topic addresses key concepts and phenomena such as the digital divide, network society, social media, disinformation, and fake news, while considering their broader implications for public discourse, political communication, and civic participation. Special attention will be dedicated to how digital communication tools, fake news and disinformation affect democratic processes such as elections and public debate/participation, and what is the legal framework and possible legal tools to address the challenges. In the concluding part, students will critically reflect on possible responses to disinformation campaigns, including fact-checking practices, media literacy, and educational interventions.

  • Wednesday 20th May – DIGITAL EDUCATION

Day 3 session include lecture and seminar focusing on Digital Education. What is digital education? What in the international educational policies is about AI? What key components of classic education (reading, writing, critical thinking and analysis) – how can these pillars reconfigure digital education? These are the key topics of the philosophical inquiry, lectures, critical discussions and reflections of the day.

  • Thursday 21st May – DIGITAL HUMANISM

Day 4 session focuses on Digital Humanism, with reference to foundational philosophical questions, critical reflections on transhumanism, and computer-human interface, the use of LLMs, turing test, socratic method, and philosophical analysis of key concepts.

  • Friday 22nd May – PROJECTS PRESENTATION

The final day of Summer School II will be dedicated to presentation of group projects, discussion about the addressed problems and feedback from lecturers.

Groups of 3-4 students, with a interdisciplinary perspective (communication, education, digital humanism/culture) will present their project-work, developed using the following methodology:

SUSEES 2026 - Summer School in European Education Studies

The SUSEES 2026 Summer School is an initiative jointly organised by the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II and the Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (CNR-IRISS), in cooperation with the EURIDICE project, the Department of Human and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-DSU), the European Educational Research Association (EERA), the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon, KU Leuven and the University of Strasbourg.

The Summer School

SUSEES is an intensive international programme dedicated to European education studies, established around ten years ago within the Network 28 – Sociologies of Education of the European Educational Research Association, the largest association for educational research in Europe. Since its inception, SUSEES has received more than 400 applications and hosted over 200 early-career researchers from Europe and across the globe, contributing to the development of an international and interdisciplinary community of scholars.

Designed for PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and early-stage scholars, SUSEES offers an intensive and collaborative environment in which theoretical reflection and empirical research are closely intertwined. Conceived as an open laboratory, the programme encourages participants to critically explore how different conceptual and methodological approaches can be mobilised to open up new research questions and perspectives on education in Europe.

Over the years, the Summer School has been hosted in cities such as Strasbourg, Naples, Leuven and Lisbon, fostering a transnational academic network in which many participants have continued to collaborate and publish in leading journals in the field, including the European Educational Research Journal.

The Programme

The four-day programme combines lectures delivered by leading scholars with workshops and collaborative laboratory sessions, offering a dialogic and interactive learning experience. Particular attention is devoted to the relationship between theory and research practice, as well as to the development of methodological awareness in the study of education. Participants will engage in hands-on activities, including group work, collaborative labs and mobile workshops across the city, fostering exchange and collective learning. The full programme of the Summer School will be published shortly.

The call for applications for the 2026 edition of the Summer School in European Education Studies (SUSEES) is now open.

As education systems across Europe are undergoing significant transformations, particularly in relation to governance and digitalisation, SUSEES offers a space to critically explore these developments through research and dialogue.

Following the 2025 edition held at the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon, the Summer School will take place in Naples, from 8 to 11 September 2026, hosted by the University of Naples Federico II and CNR-IRISS.

Application Process and Practical Information

Applications are open to early-career researchers and must be submitted by 31 May 2026:

  • Applicants are invited to submit a CV, a short description of their current research project and a motivation letter by 31 May 2026 to the following address: susees2017@gmail.com.
  • Selected candidates will be notified by 10 June 2026, with registration to be completed by 30 June 2026.

  • Participation in the summer school is free of charge.

  • Participants are expected to cover their own travel costs, while accommodation in Naples (four nights, from 7 to 11 September) will be provided by the University of Naples Federico II and CNR-IRISS, contributing to an accessible and inclusive international learning environment.
